Rings (2017)

Rating: 2/5 stars

Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 8% Critics, 23% Audience

Overview: The killer tape resurfaces over a decade after we last saw it, and it falls into the hands of a college professor intent on finding out if the afterlife is real, with the tape as his proof.  But it all spins out of control with Julia sees the tape, and a second video is discovered in the file.  Can Julia figure out the tape in seven days before her time runs out?

Best elements: The expansion of the original story is undoubtedly my favorite thing about this film.  As one of the first horror films I remember, I loved “The Ring” even If it doesn’t fill the nostalgic void now.  This film allowed for that same story to progress both past and future, and the lore changing with the times was a smart choice by the writers.

Short falls:  This movie struggles the same way the original did.  Its pacing drops off in the middle, when the film seems to forget that as a horror film it should be scary.  Instead we slip into the detective portion of “Law and Order” and then have to excavate manufactured scares from within that flawed framework.

Recommendations/ Similar works: If you like The Ring or Rings, then try movies like Deliver us from Evil or TV series like Archive 81.
